| General Statement of Duties: |
Tends stationary high pressure boilers that supply heat or power for turbines, and steam- powered equipment to provide steam heat and electricity to campus buildings. |
| Knowledge and Abilities: |
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or abilities required. Ability: •To use tools related to the maintenance and repair of boilers and diesel equipment. •To read and interpret documents, instructions, and procedure manuals. •To have basic mathematical skills as well as compute rate, ratio, and percentage and to draw and interpret bar graphs. •To apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. |
| Qualifications: |
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
High School diploma / GED; Valid driver’s license for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. First Class Boiler Fireman License. Appropriate work permit/Visa. |
| Scope: |
Physical demands must be met for safe operation of power equipment. Vision, hearing, movement – use of hands to operate steam valves. Eyes to see gauges – instrumentation at distance – read engineer log. Summer time work would be in physical plant. |
| Working conditions: |
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to: Wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Hearing protection required at all times. |

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. |
