General Description and Goals:
The Family Resource Center Director will lead a Family Resource Center and its staff in providing high quality customer service to current and future Boston Public Schools families. The Director will supervise the staff of the Family Resource Center in registering students and outreaching to parents and community organizations concerning how, where and when to register.
The Director will reach out across departments within the Boston Public Schools (e.g., Welcome Services, Teaching and Learning, Special Education & Related Services) and community organizations to ensure the highest quality of registration and assignment services are available to current, incoming, and prospective Boston Public School families. Additionally, during peak registration, the Director will ensure the smooth operation of the Center by re-organizing staff, re-ordering priorities and setting up a flexible working schedule.
Responsibilities:
1. Supervise, train, and develop Center staff with a focus on teamwork and customer service
2. Create a professional, friendly and welcoming environment for families
3. Continuously improve the registration process and service to families
4. Ensure proper implementation of Boston Public School Committee policies regarding student registration and assignment (e.g. residency policy, age requirements)
5. Work closely with the assignment staff to understand the methodology of assigning students to school, get status updates on particular students and ensure the timely assignment of students
6. Resolve conflicts when they occur
7. Maintain direct contact with principals and headmasters in the zone in order to develop a deep knowledge of their schools, programs and initiatives
8. Recruit, train, and oversee volunteers and coordinate volunteer functions and programs in support of the Center's mission
9. Work as a team member with other Family Resource Center Directors and the Senior Director of Enrollment Services
10. Collaborate with other school system departments (e.g., Transportation, OIIT, Facilities) to ensure the highest quality of services are available
11. Develop and implement standard operating procedures for providing services to families
12. Maintain appropriate records of families and issues addressed in the Center
13. Provide periodic reports on the work of the Center
14. Pursue external funding opportunities to further the work of the Center
15. Manage day-to-day operations of the Center, including time and attendance management, supply ordering, etc.
16. Perform other related duties as requested by the Senior Director of Enrollment Services
Qualifications
Required:
* Minimum of 2 years of college credit or an Associates Degree or equivalent experience
* Experience delivering and evaluating quality customer service
* Experience leading and/or effectively managing an educational, parent, community, and/or other organization focused on customer service
* Ability to create and maintain strong community collaborations
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to train, supervise, and evaluate staff from different cultural backgrounds and skill sets
* Experience managing budgets incorporating multiple funding sources
* Deep understanding of and empathy for issues facing urban families
* Demonstrated leadership qualities, interpersonal skills and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with a variety of groups and community based organizations, parents, community and religious leaders, advocates, teachers, principals/headmasters, and others
* Ability to manage multiple constituencies
Preferred:
* Bachelors or Masters Degree
* Experience leading an organization through a change process
* Ability to work effectively with second language constituents
* Knowledge of special education regulations
* Experience engaging parents, families, and community members in educational, parent, community, and/or other similar organizations effectively
* Fluency in a second language
* Residency in the city of Boston
