General Description and Goals:
The Senior Program Director is responsible for providing district-wide leadership and support to schools in the following areas: implementation of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education ELA Standards, supervision and evaluation of the implementation of English program(s) in all middle schools and high schools, program development, professional development, selection and management of instructional materials, community collaboration, grant development and management.
This position is in the newly formed Literacy Department. One of the key goals of the Boston Public Schools Literacy Plan is that all students will develop a deep understanding of reading, writing and thinking, language and discourse needed to meet the demands of rigorous state and local performance standards. In the interest of meeting this goal, the Boston Public Schools are engaged in a citywide effort to support and ensure the effective implementation of exemplary curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices in each elementary, middle and high school.
The Senior Program Director will be responsible for: 1. Conducting curriculum implementation reviews designed to assess and improve the implementation of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. 2. Facilitating and supervising the implementation of the middle and high school curricula, and all related assessment activities. 3. Developing and implementing the citywide professional development program in English Language Arts. 4. Creating and updating English teacher support materials and resources, including the Secondary English website on MyBPS.
The Senior Program Director will assist the Director of Literacy, and school-based Program Directors and Coaches in the implementation of all aspects of the BPS Literacy Plan. The Senior Program Director will supervise both middle and high school Literacy Program Directors 6-8 and 9-12. The Senior Program Director will also assist school administrators with, teachers' performance evaluations, as needed.
The Senior Program Director will also assist in the selection of literacy coaches and the coordination of professional development for them in the schools and at coach PD.
Responsibilities:
Together with the Director of Literacy, the Senior Program Director for Secondary Literacy will:
1. Implementation of the Citywide ELA and Content Area Literacy Standards:
1. participate in the review, revision and implementation of the district's standards.
2. assist in school-based planning, resource development and problem-solving
3. Monitor and assess the implementation of the standards and classroom instruction, in schools and provide explicit feedback and prescriptions to the Director of Literacy, the Academic Superintendents, and the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
2. Professional and Program Development:
1. lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of an effective, year-round, citywide and school-based professional development program in Secondary Literacy.
2. design and deliver courses, institutes and other professional development opportunities, in collaboration with the Office of Professional Development, Curriculum and Instruction, Office of English Language Learners, Special Education and local universities.
3. monitor the effectiveness of school-based Literacy programs citywide, and support instructional leaders in their program and professional development efforts
4. assist school-based supervisors who have little or no background in literacy in establishing an effective performance evaluation process and professional development program.
5. provide support and professional development to administrators (in collaboration with Academic superintendents and the Assistant Superintendent for Professional Development) responsible for supervising and evaluating teachers; assist with the supervision and performance evaluations of low performing teachers, as needed.
6. collaborate with an Academic Superintendents for Middle and High schools, the Program Directors for Middle and High school, the Director of Literacy and the Assistant Superintendent for Professional Development in the design and delivery of literacy professional development for coaches, principals and teachers.
3. Curriculum/Instructional Materials: coordinate the identification and adoption of high quality instructional materials for elementary schools citywide
4. Resource Development and Management: identify, secure and manage funds for local Literacy initiatives, in collaboration with local institutions and organizations
1. Prepare annual program plans and budgets for the utilization of all city and external funds
5. Assessment:
1. As part of the ongoing monitoring and program evaluation process, collect and analyze school and student data and provide feedback and prescriptions to schools, the Director of Literacy, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and the Academic Superintendents.
2. Assist in the selection of the literacy assessment program and coordinate with the Director of Assessment and the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
6. Assist Human Resources and the New Teacher support program in the recruitment, selection and support of new teachers
7. Perform other related duties as requested by the Literacy Director and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction
8. Participate fully in professional development, including peer observations, professional research and reading, and inquiry sessions.
9. Act as an advisor to the Director of Literacy, Senior Program Director for Elementary Literacy, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and the Academic Superintendents.
10. Collaborate with Special Education staff and the Office of English Language learners to coordinate the activities with the Literacy Department.
Qualifications
Required:
? Masters Degree
? Supervisor/Director License
? English Teaching License
? Consultant Teacher of Reading Licensure PreK-12
? Three years central Program Director experience
? Deep knowledge of the reading process and writing process
? Deep knowledge of K-12 ELA learning standards
? Deep knowledge of and experience teaching Readers' and Writers' Workshop
? Experience teaching/coaching teachers in the area of literacy and/or English
? Knowledge of adult learning theory
? Outstanding presentation and facilitation skills
? Interpersonal skills to share proven instructional approaches and teachers and administrators and provide advice and coaching
? Strong organizational skills and efficiency in meeting deadlines
Preferred:
? Masters Degree plus 30 credits
? Assessment development experience and expertise
? Experience managing citywide English initiatives (curriculum, instruction, and assessment)
