Seeks a Part-Time Math/Technology Teacher

Boston Day and Evening Academy is seeking an extraordinary teacher of Mathematics and Technology for the Evening Program to work part-time. BDEA is a thirteen-year-old Horace Mann Charter School, within the Boston Public Schools, that serves over-age students who want to graduate from high school. Our day school serves 16-18 year old students who are overage for grade and just beginning their high school experience. Our evening program serves 16-23 year old students who attended high school previously and are now returning to earn their diploma. In addition to the day and evening programs, BDEA also has an innovative Distance Learning program. The school employs 47 full and part-time staff to work with 350 students and is governed by an active Board of Trustees. It is also a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools, a national school reform organization.
We are looking for a teacher who is committed to working with our students, who understands the lives of urban youth and who has a track record of working successfully with students who face academic and personal challenges. BDEA teachers are expected to coach students both academically and personally through academic classes, electives, enrichment and a daily advisory period. Teachers also work collaboratively to develop and teach a competency-based curriculum where students exhibit proficiency through projects, portfolios and other alternative assessments.
Math-Technology Teacher
Responsibilities
1. Teach two academic classes of 18 students each during first Trimester, both classes will be in Math, second and third trimesters the 2 classes will be a combination of 2 math or 1 math and 1 basic technology class, based on student need.
2. Assist with development of student individual learning plans
3. Collaborate with other teaching staff to develop interdisciplinary and project-based curricula and alternative assessments such as portfolios and exhibitions.
4. Participate in the development and success of Assessment Week, Symposium and other community and all-school events
5. Participate in professional development and curriculum planning activities, as needed.
6. Support and coach students to pass the MCAS
7. Perform other related duties to assure smooth program functioning.
Qualifications
Required: A successful candidate will
? Possess the core competencies of excellent teaching including charisma, compassion and intellectual curiosity
? Be able to interact with young people in a respectful and caring manner
? Be student centered and committed to coaching students towards success, devoting additional time to students if necessary
? Commitment to designing and implementing a competency based curriculum
? Be able to assess student competency in multiple ways
? Create a learning environment where the teacher is coach and student is worker
? Have a math content area certification in the State of Massachusetts.

? Have experience and ability to instruct students on basic and advance technology skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
? Have the ability to teach to multiple learning styles using a variety of methods
? Have experience with curriculum development
? Have experience with or enthusiasm for experiential education and/or competency based instruction and assessment
? Have a commitment to working with the families of our students and with parenting students
? Have a commitment to working in a diverse environment that affirms pluralism (Economic, racial, religious, linguistic, physical ability, sexual orientation, National origin, age, gender, etc).
Preferred:
? Bilingual Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Cape Verdean Creole a strong plus
? Dual certification in Special Education a strong plus
? Masters Degree a strong plus
? Prior work or volunteer experience with non-traditional students in an alternative setting
? Comfortable with a workshop and/or coaching approach to instruction
? Experience with any of the following: project-based learning, portfolio assessment, competency-based education, cooperative group work, integration of technology and cross disciplinary learning, expeditionary learning, alternative assessments and integrating school to career experiences into the curriculum
? Familiarity with the Ten Common Principals of the Coalition of Essential Schools
? A strong commitment to supporting reading, writing and problem solving across the curriculum
? A sense of humor
Schedule: 4:30-7:30 pm, M-Th
Compensation: in line with BTU teacher salary scale, pro-rated to align with number of work hours.
