Main purpose of the job
To provide functional leadership for electronics on medical device and medical instrument development projects, acting as technical authority and/or systems architect.
You will translate client project requirements into innovative electronics architectures and provide creative solutions to design challenges within an ISO13485 regulatory framework.
The role will also cover non-medical product development projects as our business expands into new areas.
Type of work undertaken by the division/group
The Medical Technology Division in the US undertakes the development of innovative medical devices and equipment from concept, through prototype manufacture, to new product introduction, often incorporating considerable technical challenges.
We undertake development projects in three principal focus areas:
- Surgical products and medical systems
- Drug delivery devices
- Connected health systems
We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and broad industry experience to form powerful development teams. Our work ranges from complete product developments to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.
Typical project examples include:
- Ultra low cost, high volume electronics for disposable drug delivery devices
- High performance/reliability electronics for Class III implantable devices
- Embedded systems for remote patient monitoring applications
The division undertakes both client funded and internally funded projects.
Specific responsibilities
- Attending and presenting at client meetings
- Using your strong technical expertise to understand client project requirements and key technical challenges
- Defining technical solutions, systems architectures and design solutions for product or system developments
- Writing project proposals, technical specifications and technical reports
- Hands-on design of electronics that successfully integrates with software
- Specification and selection of key electronics components, including development of the associated supply chain
- Working with multidisciplinary teams to deliver complete system solutions and products
- Managing internal and external resources to meet the design, build, test and manufacturing criteria
- High quality documentation to ISO13485 standard
Minimum requirements
To meet the demanding requirements of this role you will have an excellent undergraduate degree in electronics and you will have greater than 10 years experience in an electronic engineering role with leadership responsibilities.
A solid technical and practical knowledge base in analog, digital and embedded systems in the medical device sector is essential for this role, including both design and manufacturing aspects.
You will have excellent team working skills and the ability and enthusiasm to train and mentor less experienced staff. You will also have strong client communication and management skills and must be willing to travel up to 30% of the time.
Your skill set will include:
- Electronics and embedded systems architecture design
- Deep experience of analog and digital electronics design including:
- Low noise design techniques
- Analog modeling and simulation tools
- Signal integrity
- Power supply
- Microcontrollers
- PCB design and layout, selection of electronic components and peripherals
- Solid experience in design for manufacture, test, cost and reliability
- Good familiarity with relevant standards including:
- Implementing IEC60601 (including EMC requirements), WEEE and RoHS requirements
- Significant experience with ISO13485 and risk management to ISO14971
- Proven track record in managing new product introduction and manufacturer selection
In addition, experience of the following would be advantageous:
- FPGAs and CPLDs
- Control engineering
- Embedded software design and implementation
- CE, UL, CSA (including EMC requirements)
A post-graduate qualification would also be advantageous.
