Senior Lead Mechanical Engineer – Home Robots Division

Location: Bedford, MA
We seek an experienced Senior Lead Mechanical Engineer for our Home Robots Division. In this role, you will have overall responsibility and technical leadership for the mechanical system architecture for a number of existing and new iRobot products. Leveraging your system level expertise, grasp of cutting edge technologies and experience in the design of high volume, complex electromechanical products you will lead the development of technologically sophisticated and innovative new products for the consumer market place.
Responsibilities:
Leads the architectural definition and overall mechanical systems design for new and existing iRobot products. Assumes project level responsibility including requirements and design definition, tradeoff analysis, risk assessment and technical leadership. Responsible for execution of the mechanical engineering content as defined in the program plan.
Determines technical and cost feasibility; acts as advisor to program management and customers in the planning and execution of present and future projects. Prepares and presents mechanical engineering sections of proposals and cost estimates.
Conducts technical risk assessment by identifying and evaluating major system and subsystem cost drivers and cost impact of alternatives. Establishes cost of key performance requirements and determines cost/performance tradeoffs.
In cooperation with product management, analyzes strategic opportunities including new business, technology advancements, cost / parts reduction, for current and proposed programs. Aligns mechanical engineering choices and alternatives with the division technology roadmap and provides input into the roadmap.
Oversees and manages the work of subordinates and provides mentorship and guidance to more junior engineers. Prepares mechanical engineering budgets.
Job Requirements :
Requirements/Qualifications:
10+ years experience designing high volume, low cost, complex electromechanical products manufactured offshore. China contract manufacturing experience preferred.
5+ years experience developing high volume consumer products incorporating injection molded plastic parts, complex mechanisms, and electronics. Experience with injection molded plastic part design. Experience with floor care products including vacuum cleaners strongly preferred.
Experience taking several high-volume products from concept through debug and into production. Experience with offshore manufacturing practices and demonstrated effectiveness with remotely located design and manufacturing partners.
Demonstrated ability to successfully lead small teams to accomplish aggressive goals. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and prioritization skills.
Minimum 8 years CAD, Pro/E preferred.
BSME, advanced degree preferred.
