Initiatives


Since 2002, the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative has been assisting developing countries in implementing large-scale, integrated care, treatment and prevention programs.  The Foundation takes a business-like approach to addressing operational barriers to program scale-up and to working with manufacturers to lower prices and introduce new products while maintaining high quality standards.  The Clinton Climate Initiative, launched in 2006, works with the 40 largest cities in the world to establish the highest priorities for developing, financing and implementing programs which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. 



CHAI is a unique organization in that it deploys best practice private sector approaches to achieve rapid change and humanitarian progress in the global public healthcare world.  It is an exceptionally fast paced and 24/7 culture, dominated by remote (email and conference calls) communications.  All CHAI staff are highly flexible and entrepreneurial with proven experience on how to be effective in dynamic and unstructured environments.




Responsibilities:

Position Description


The Director of Communications, a new critical position for CHAI, will develop and drive the communications strategy for the initiative in collaboration with program and in-country teams in order to help CHAI achieve its core mission. S/he will be responsible for developing messaging around CHAI’s major initiatives, and working with both domestic and international media outlets as well as through global health forums to drive a number of key messages aimed at (positioning CHAI as a thought leader / key driver in the global public heath space, increasing fundraising opportunities and thus further improving access to and the quality of HIV/AIDS services in the developing world.)


 


S/he will be an essential member of the Development and Communications team reporting to EVP of Development and Communications.  This person will also work closely with the other members of the executive management team in order to bring consistent messaging to internal and external audiences.


 


The candidate must have proven experience developing and implementing communications strategies and working with the media. S/he will be innovative, entrepreneurial, analytical, creative and 100% committed to CHAI’s mission.


 


S/he will be a strategic thought partner for executive leadership, a critical thinker, and have strong people skills, including being sensitive to a wide variety of cultural and national backgrounds.


 


Key Responsibilities:




  • Strategy– work with program and country teams to develop and manage the implementation of communications plans for a set of key strategic priorities for the organization; ensure CHAI’s mission, goals and objectives are clear, succinct and messaged consistently internally and externally.



  • Brand Management  -  further develop and implement CHAI’s global brand to position CHAI’s work effectively and increase the initiative’s recognition on the global stage.



  • Development of Communications Tools– develop internal and external communications tools, processes, and procedures so that varying audiences both internal and external have clear guidance on CHAI’s work and deliverables. Build credibility and trust quickly in order to promote a communications approach across all business units within the organization. Help manage the initiative’s website to ensure it accurately reflects the organization’s communication strategy.



  • Media Relations  -  Develop and maintain key partnerships with both domestic and international media outlets in order to advance CHAI’s mission and its programs.  Serve as the ‘voice’ of the organization by speaking to major programmatic successes and priorities and responding to press inquiries strategically.  



 




Qualifications:


  • Dynamic, entrepreneurial individual with strong communications, leadership, and problem-solving skills.  A strategic thinker with excellent interpersonal skills, as well as written and verbal communication skills

  • Minimum of 7 years experience working on strategic communications and advocacy issues, preferably with experience working on and writing about development issues and/or  global public health

  • Proven experience in the conception, design, implementation, and management of communications strategies

  • Experience working proactively with international, national, state and local media, establishing productive working relationships with media contacts, including at the most senior level

  • Demonstrated ability to identify, establish, and maintain effective working relationships and communicate clearly

  • Demonstrated ability to work with the leadership of his/her organization on strategic and operational issues, as a strong yet collaborative team player and advocate

  • Demonstrated ability to influence decision making processes in a diplomatic and collaborative manner

  • Ability to understand, synthesize, and clearly articulate complex and technical issues

  • Ability to operate in an unstructured but demanding environment; and demonstrable record of achieving high-quality results
