Description:
Overview

Responsible for planning, development and implementation of the company’s public relations activities to enhance its image and position within the marketplace and the general public, and facilitate effective external communications. Collaborates with the marcom staffs in the divisions and their associated public relations agencies to improve PR at the division level and leverage business news to meet corporate PR objectives.
Responsibilities

Responsible for creating, implementing and measuring the success of a comprehensive public relations program.

 

    * Clearly articulate the company’s desired image, position and mission, and assure consistent communication to external audiences.

 

    * Draft press releases, Q&As, holding statements and other written materials for use with the media. Manage distribution of press releases.

 

    * Work closely with and manage PR agencies to coordinate media interest in the company; ensure regular contact with target media and develop appropriate responses to media requests; act as the company’s representative with the media.

 

    * Support VP, Corp. Communications in development and implementation of global crisis communications plan.

 

    * Through the company’s PR Council, provide guidance to division marcom personnel to improve public relations companywide and elevate division news to the corporate level.

 

    * Responsible for the achievement of public relations objectives and for ensuring that the company regularly measures effectiveness of PR activity. Work with the PR Council to coordinate and oversee measurement activity; Monitor trends.

 

    * Lead corporate-sponsored PR activities around major tradeshows, including working with divisional marcom personnel and PR agencies to create press releases, online and traditional press kits, media interviews, press conferences, etc.

 

    * Work with brand and corporate marketing teams to develop proactive communications programs that support marketing objectives.

 

    * Identify appropriate company executives and business and technology representatives for print and broadcast media opportunities; train and prepare company spokespeople.

 

    * Publicize community outreach projects internally and externally; work closely with program director once that spot is filled.

 

    * Develop short- and long-term plans and budgets for corporate public relations program and its activities, monitor progress, assure adherence and evaluate performance.

 

    * Develop, implement and monitor processes necessary for the smooth operation of the public relations function.

 

    * Keep informed of developments in the field of public relations and the business activities within the company that may generate publicity. Provide counsel to senior management based on the industry’s best practices.

 
Reporting Structure

The Director, Public Relations, will report to the VP, Corporate Communications.

This position will be based at corporate headquarters in Waltham, Massachusetts.

 

This position will also work closely with other members of the executive management team to fulfill PR objectives, including the VP, Investor Relations; General Counsel; the COO and CEO.

 

Collaboration and building relationships with marcom employees in the divisions is key in order to leverage business news and PR activities to meet corporate objectives.

 

 

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

 

    * Requires a bachelor's degree in communications, public relations or journalism
    * Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of public relations strategy and related activities
    * At least 10 years of experience in a communications/public relations function
    * Ability to think creatively; passionate about our subject matter
    * Outstanding writing, verbal and interpersonal skills (writing samples required)
    * Demonstrates initiative; organizes own work to meet deadlines
    * Able to think and act independently and with good judgment
    * Ability to influence colleagues in the divisions; collaborate with virtual teams across the company
    * Demonstrates analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills, with superb attention to detail and accuracy
    * Excels at developing relationships with representatives of the media and PR agencies
    * Computer literacy in word processing and data base management
    * Ability to manage multiple projects at a time
    * Occasional travel required
