External Description:
The New England Regional Biosafety Laboratory (NE-RBL) is a 41,000 square foot facility at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine dedicated to the study of existing and emerging infectious diseases, toxin-mediated diseases and medical countermeasures important to biodefense.
Investigators in academia, not-for-profit organizations, industry, and government studying biodefense and emerging infectious diseases may request the use of biocontainment laboratories.
The NE-RBL's capabilities include laboratories for study of biosafety level 2 and 3 infectious agents, including select agents.
Investigators in the NE-RBL--members of Tufts University's Division of Infectious Diseases--are experienced in many areas of research.
Public Safety supports the University community by providing various services and programs that contribute to maintaining campuses that are reasonably safe and secure.
Under the supervision of Police Operations, the Public Safety Coordinator will:
* Maintain a high level of security by providing appropriate screening of those who enter the building as well as the monitoring of building security and facility systems; Conduct security patrols and act as a liaison between Tufts Public Safety and faculty, staff and administrative personnel;
* Receive emergency and non-emergency telephone calls and after hours maintenance requests;
* Monitor computerized alarm and access control systems;
* Provide policing and EMS dispatch and radio communication management;
* Provide a communications interface with other agencies;
* Record all incidents and responses;
* Provide in-person customer service;
* Provide necessary clerical support for the department;
* Advise supervisory, command and technical staff;
* Act in a supervisory capacity for Public Safety Officers;
* Oversee the day to day operational matters;
* Follow up on personnel and systems issues, scheduling, training and disciplinary matters that may be funneled to a police supervisor and up the chain of command as necessary;
* Interact with the Police Supervisor and provide the Sergeant with evaluations of alarm reports, staff reviews and problem solve for issues that arise;
* Be responsible for evaluating performance and effectiveness of personnel, systems and processes, handle time off requests as well as unscheduled absences, payroll documentation and distribution of equipment.
Basic Requirements: High School Diploma or the equivalent with up to one year experience. Valid US Drivers License. CPR instruction and certification will be provided if not already certified, as CPR certification is required. Ability to learn and work with card access and other computerized systems. Must be able to successfully complete a psychological and a physical exam. Must pass a background investigation of personal character, professional references and criminal records. Position offer is contingent upon successful outcome of background check. Ability to lift 25 lbs.
Prefered Qualifications: Prefer at least two years experience in a public safety field. Supervisory experience preferred. Should be able to prioritize and complete multiple time critical tasks. Function calmly and efficiently under stressful conditions. Candidate should have very strong written and verbal communication skills. Good interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively work with police officers, students, staff, faculty, parents of students, contract guards, non-affiliates as well as the ability to deal professionally with confrontational situations or difficult people. Should be able to pay attention to detail and focus on activities or persons that raise suspicion and make appropriate notifications. Proficiency with computers & radios highly desirable. Should be able to act as a lead person, be extremely professional and assertive enough to deal with difficult supervisory situations. Should have strong organizational skills and the ability to recognize needs and propose recommendations through the appropriate channels. Should be able to handle routine and time off scheduling for all Public Safety Officers.
Special Work Schedule Requirements: May be required to work rotating shifts or nights, weekends and holidays. May be required to report for duty at any time, including during states of emergency and university closings.
