Responsibilities


The Senior UNIX Engineer provides 3rd level technical support of production systems, including incident response, OS patching automation, provides standard and automated tools for system upgrades , user administration, and provides advanced systems integration to approved project initiatives.  He/She directly contributes to the goals of the division in Availability and Project Delivery of mission-critical services and systems through expert-level performance of all UNIX systems management tasks.  He/She has a mastery of UNIX tools and several scripting languages to automate and perform process improvement of day to day duties,  and has an expert level understanding of networking protocols and system administration processes which they use to troubleshoot and remediate complex operational errors and performance issues. He/She provides expert-level system administration skills to troubleshooting  existing systems and implementing new projects, provide new standards and technology, acts as an a senior ‘architect’ level person within the team,  mentors other team members, participates heavily, sometimes as lead, in purchasing decisions, up to and including purchasing authority and responsibility for purchase justification.  Senior UNIX Engineer also performs due diligence testing on new technology for cost-savings and system enhancements, providing presentations on these to upper management, business line owners, and other personnel. 


  











Qualifications
 6+ years of UNIX Administration
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or MIS/CIS preferred
Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of writing proposals
or papers, acting as a vendor liaison, making presentations to customers
or client audiences or professional peers, and working closely with upper
management.
Ability to solve problems quickly and automate processes.
A solid understanding of an operating system; understands paging and
swapping, inter-process communications, devices and what device drivers
do, filesystem concepts (inode, clustering, logical partitions), can use performance
analysis to tune systems.
A solid understanding of networking/distributed computing environment concepts; understands principles of routing, client/server programming, the
design of consistent network-wide filesystem layouts.
Ability to program in an administrative language (Tk, Perl, VBScript, a shell), to port C programs from one platform to another, and to write small C or C# programs. Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of writing proposals or papers, acting as a vendor liaison, making presentations to customers or client audiences or professional peers, and working closely with upper management.
High skill with most operating system commands/utilities.
Comfortable with most aspects of operating system administration; for example, configuration of mail systems, system installation and configuration, printer systems, fundamentals of security, installing third-party software.
Documents and automates processes, recommends new technologies and tests new system functions/upgrades.
Has a solid understanding of a UNIX-based operating system; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communication, devices and what
device drivers do, filesystem concepts (inode, clustering, logical partitions).
Familiarity with advanced networking/distributed computing environment concepts; can configure NFS and LDAP/AD domains; can use nslookup or dig to check information in the DNS; understands advanced routing concepts.
